2022 Birmingham Kidney & Celebration
Team Kemberly
We are pleased to be serving as the Alabama Kidney Foundation’s 2022 Birmingham Kidney Walk Honorary Co-Chairs and hope to bring more awareness to this debilitating disease.
As a former Alabama football player and current defensive tackle for the Washington Commanders, I am not afraid to face obstacles that come my way. However, nothing could have prepared my family when my mom, Kemberly Smith, discovered her lupus had attacked her kidneys and would need dialysis. Her determination to maintain normalcy in our lives and be there for me and my siblings continues to inspire me.
My mom was fortunate to finally receive the call that there was a kidney waiting for her in 2016. For many patients, the average wait time for a kidney transplant is 7 years. Over 400,000 Alabamians have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and more than 14,000 must receive life-saving dialysis treatments each week. The treatments are time-consuming and debilitating, making it difficult for many patients to continue working.
The Alabama Kidney Foundation (AKF) is the only state-based organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Alabama’s kidney patients. The Foundation provides financial services to kidney patients in need to pay for medication, transportation to and from treatment, and utility bills – to name a few.
The annual Birmingham Kidney Walk & Celebration will be held on August 13th at Veteran’s Park from 8:30-11:00AM! See you there for this great cause!
